Health equity, policy and governance

I work on the politics of health systems, from primary care in Ontario to global health governance.

For five years I have worked in policy and strategy inside Ontario's primary care system. My work centres on three questions: who a health system reaches, how it is run, and who decided it should work that way.

What I work on.

Who it reaches

Health equity

Who a health system reaches, who it leaves out, and what it takes to close that gap, from access to primary care to who holds leadership roles.

How it is run

Health systems strengthening and governance

How health systems are funded, governed and held to account, and how they can be made stronger and more accessible.

Who decided

The political determinants of health

How power, political parties and institutions shape health outcomes, with a regional focus on South Asia, including Punjab and India.

About Prabhjot Sangha.

I am a first-generation Punjabi Canadian and a health policy and strategy professional based in the Greater Toronto Area. I approach health care as a right, and I see gaps in access as structural problems that better policy can help solve.

I studied public health at the University of Waterloo, and working in the field showed me that the most lasting improvements come from changing the system itself, through policy, financing and governance. That is the work I have focused on since, through an MSc in Global Health Policy at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and my policy and strategy work in Ontario's primary care sector.

My work in health is informed by a wider interest in politics, history and international development. Over the long term, I hope to contribute to health systems governance at the national and global level, through both practice and research. My focus is universal health coverage: how it is implemented, how it reaches the people furthest from care, and how the systems behind it remain accountable to the people they serve.
